Odour Source Sampling Strategy in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Odour Monitoring develops an odour source sampling strategy in Saudi Arabia for operators and consultants, covering stacks, vents, tanks, wastewater units, lagoons, landfills, compost, storage areas and other passive surfaces. Odour samples are only useful when the sampling approach represents the source and the receiving laboratory can analyse them within an agreed method. We coordinate equipment and information, while qualified sampling teams and laboratories retain responsibility for activities requiring their competence, accreditation or controlled procedures.

The strategy starts before equipment is mobilised. It defines the question, source conditions, operating window, sample type, quality controls, laboratory acceptance criteria and reporting pathway; not every source can be sampled with the same bag or chamber. Odour source sampling strategy: match the method to the source

A duct or stack may provide a defined flow, temperature and access point. A tank headspace may be intermittent and affected by filling or ventilation. A wastewater basin or landfill surface is diffuse, so a chamber or wind-tunnel approach may be considered. The source geometry, moisture, temperature, particulate loading, chemical reactivity and expected concentration influence the selection.

Manufacturer documentation describes the Scentroid SF450 flux chamber and SW60 wind tunnel as tools for sampling emissions from liquid or solid surfaces. The VC20 vacuum chamber is designed to fill a sample bag without drawing sample through the pump, while the DS5 stack diluting sampler is intended for controlled dilution of hot or concentrated stack gas to help manage condensation. These capabilities are starting points, not automatic method approval. Exact materials, flow settings, gases and project method must be verified with the sampling team.

Our odour sampling equipment page provides product context. The sampling strategy determines whether that equipment is suitable for the actual application.

Define representative operating conditions

Sampling at an unrepresentative process condition can produce a precise result that answers the wrong question. We document production rate, batch stage, tank level, aeration, chemical dosing, cleaning, loading, temperature and abnormal conditions that may affect emissions. For intermittent sources, several windows may be more useful than a single convenient visit.

The source inventory from a site odour screening and monitoring plan helps prioritise which sources to sample. Complaint timing and wind observations may also identify an operating period worth targeting. Where field staff must compare odour character around the site, a separate field olfactometry and patrol plan can complement, but not replace, source sampling.

Protect sample integrity

The receiving laboratory should confirm container material, preparation, acceptable sample volume, transport conditions, maximum holding time and chain-of-custody fields before collection. The field plan can include equipment blanks, field blanks, duplicates and cleaning records where relevant. Sample labels must remain unambiguous from collection through receipt.

Moisture and condensation are important because they can change the sample and affect compounds differently. Adsorption, reaction and leakage may also bias results. A dilution approach can be considered for some hot or concentrated sources, but dilution gas quality and dilution factor need controlled documentation. The laboratory method is set with the laboratory.

Coordinate analysis and interpretation

If the objective is perceived odour concentration, we can coordinate dynamic olfactometry and odour-panel support through a laboratory. If the objective is compound identification, VOC and sulfur analytical coordination may be more appropriate. These are different questions: a chemical concentration does not automatically describe perceived odour, and an odour result does not identify every contributing compound.

Laboratory competence is method- and scope-specific. ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for testing and calibration laboratory competence, but a certificate alone is not enough; the relevant method and current scope must be checked.

What the strategy delivers

A typical deliverable records:

The proposal states which party performs collection, site permits, process isolation, access and laboratory analysis.

This sampling-strategy support is available for projects across Saudi Arabia, including Jubail, Dammam, Riyadh and Jeddah. Mobilisation and sample transport must be planned around the laboratory’s holding-time limits. Hazardous-area suitability is never assumed: the exact equipment configuration and certification must be confirmed for each classified location. Findings can support an odour source identification workflow, but no single sample is guaranteed to establish attribution.

Frequently asked questions

Can one sampling method cover stacks and wastewater surfaces?

Usually not. A defined duct, an enclosed headspace and a passive surface have different flow and representativeness issues. The sampling team selects a source-appropriate method and records its limitations.

Who provides odour source sampling strategy in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Odour Monitoring develops the strategy and supplies the sampling equipment. The proposal identifies the responsible party for each task; work requiring specialist competence, controlled methods or accreditation is performed by a sampling team or partner.

What affects the cost of an odour source sampling strategy?

Cost follows the number and type of sources, the sampling equipment and quality controls, the number of operating windows, mobilisation and sample transport, and the laboratory analysis list.

How long does an odour source sampling strategy take?

Timing depends on source access, the operating windows to be covered, laboratory acceptance requirements and holding-time limits. Lead time is confirmed in the quotation.

What equipment may be used for passive surfaces?

A verified flux chamber or wind-tunnel configuration may be considered for liquid or solid surfaces. Suitability depends on the method, surface, required emission basis and receiving laboratory requirements.

How do I plan an odour source sampling strategy with the laboratory?

Select the laboratory before fieldwork. The laboratory sets sample acceptance, container, volume, holding time, custody and method requirements. Confirming these after collection risks unusable or compromised samples.

Can samples be taken in a classified hazardous area?

Saudi Odour Monitoring serves projects across Saudi Arabia, including Dammam, Al Khobar, Jubail, Riyadh, Jeddah, NEOM and Qiddiya.

Only after the site and competent parties verify the exact equipment, certification, work permit and method for that location. Standard product availability does not establish hazardous-area suitability.
